Planet of the Apes by Pierre Boulle

I bought this book for my Kindle a long time ago, but I didn't read it...until recently. I was listening to a podcast when I heard mention of Pierre Boulle and I decided that I would read Planet of the Apes, one of only two books he wrote (the other being Bridge Over the River Kwai).

Having watched the original movie several times, I was aware of the story, but despite this, I was absolutely hooked on it. The main character, Ulysse, is a journalist who travels on a super-fast space trip to planet Soror, which is much like Earth, but it has one major difference: the intelligent race are apes. Ulysse is quite a strong character, typically human. The apes he meets are so close to human it is incredibly believable. The difference between this book and the movie are sometimes small, sometimes huge. And there were times when I was totally taken by surprise!

My overall opinion is that this is the best book I have read this year by far. It is funny, crazy, and scarily real. On GoodReads, I wished they had a 6th star rating, it was that good!

If you love books by the likes of H.G. Wells and Jules Verne, this book is a must read.

My kindle version has this cover, although I do not know if the 3D effects would work...I doubt it!
